The workplace is where most people spend large parts of the day, and poor acoustics and sound environments are a major burden for many people. Norwegian Standard NS 8175:2012 (last updated 2019) sets clear rules for permitted sound levels in shopping centres and shops

Common denominator

Common to these areas is that the reverberation should be short. Ventilation and fixed technical installations must be quiet and inaudible.

For many of the areas we spend time in every day, such noise should not exceed 30 dB. In many cases, the noise should be lower than 30 dB. The permitted values for reverberation and noise in these areas are set out in NS8175.

Typical complaints associated with persistent noise and poor acoustics: difficulty concentrating, headaches, stress leading to shoulder and neck pain, sleep problems, burnout, aggression.

Industrial buildings

Poor sound conditions in many industrial buildings lead to poor working conditions for employees and noise pollution to surrounding buildings and neighbours.

Noise in industrial buildings often comes from machinery and activities. Combined with a lack of sound-absorbing materials in buildings and halls, this creates poor sound conditions and poor living and working conditions.

Taken together, the noise often results in sound levels well above what is acceptable and permitted by the regulations. This causes discomfort for those who work there and those who visit as customers.

In our experience, very few industrial buildings fulfil the requirements of the Norwegian Standard included in TEK. Norwegian Standard NS 8175:2012 (last updated 2019) sets clear limits for permitted sound levels and reverberation time.

Shopping centre and shops

Do you get tired after just a few hours at work?

To achieve good sales, customers should feel comfortable in the store. Too much reverberation and noise can cause customers to move on quickly to the next store. Employees also experience poor working conditions and are tired and fatigued at the end of the day.

Shops in shopping centres also face the challenge of large openings to common areas. Sound travels both ways and the experience can be disturbing and disruptive.

A combination of sound-damping ceilings, absorbers on the walls and special furniture and pictures/decorations can be achieved "everywhere" and to such an extent that the conditions are very good for both employees and customers. If you muffle your store in the shopping centre, the sound is absorbed more quickly inside the store and the sound pressure is perceived as lower and more pleasant. The shopping centre can also implement soundproofing measures in public areas that significantly reduce the sound from the public.

This is how much you need

In areas where there is activity and a desire for good attenuation and shielding of sound, it is important to have a lot of and correct sound attenuation, known in technical terms as sound absorption.

Most rooms tend to have hard, parallel walls and surfaces, which causes reverberation (echo). And in some cases, the sound "bounces" between the walls, known as "flutter echo".

Reverberation and flutter echoes are eliminated by installing absorbers at "speaking height" on the walls and ceiling. At the same time, acoustic partitions are well suited to creating "quiet zones" and attenuating directional sound, while providing visual screening. In open, large rooms, it is also effective to install absorbers that hang from the ceiling, such as rafts or baffles.

After carrying out a large number of measurements, calculations and installations, we have learnt that most living spaces need a coverage level of approx. 65% in relation to floor area to be good and usable rooms for most applications. If there is extra headroom, greater coverage is often required.

A combination of sound-absorbing ceilings, absorbers on the walls, carpets and special sound-absorbing furniture and pictures/decorations can be realised "everywhere" and to such an extent that the conditions are very good for the users.

The formula is as follows
The room's m² / 100 x experience-based coverage ratio of 65% = X m²

Example
The room is 75 metres² / 100 x 65% = approx. 48.75 m² absorbers are needed in the room.

This is, of course, a rough and experience-based approach. To be more precise, you need to carry out acoustic measurements in the area and base exact calculations on that.
