Sound reduction contributes to a better everyday life for children and young people, it is also necessary to prevent long-term hearing damage that can have implications later in life. 1 in 6 children leave kindergarten with impaired hearing or ringing in the ears. Soundproofing is also important to protect employees' hearing, as 1 in 3 kindergarten employees develop tinnitus.

School

To achieve good pedagogical results in schools, good learning conditions are needed in the classrooms. Good speaking and listening conditions are therefore crucial for learning.

This is best achieved by meeting the requirements for sound and noise as described in the standard NS8175:2012 and updated version NS8175:2019. This sets clear requirements for maximum noise and reverberation in schools, in all types of rooms. In our experience, many schools do not fulfil the current requirements and the sound conditions in classrooms in particular and schools in general are very poor.

We have confirmed time and time again that the everyday lives of children, young people and adults are greatly improved by reducing the noise created in schools and campuses by installing sufficient sound absorption and installations in the premises.

A combination of sound-absorbing ceilings, sound-absorbing partitions and special sound-absorbing notice boards as well as fabric-covered furniture and pictures can always be installed, regardless of the room. Enough must be installed to create favourable conditions for both students and teachers.

Day care centre

Studies show that 1 in 3 kindergarten employees develop tinnitus and ringing in the ears. This has been confirmed by Swedish studies in 2012 (Umeå University, Fredrik Sjødin).

Norwegian Standard NS 8175:2012 (updated version NS8175:2019) sets clear rules for permitted sound levels in daycare centres. In our experience, many daycare centres do not meet the requirements of the standard set in 2012 and later updated with stricter requirements from 2019.

The current situation is that an average of 80 dB of noise has been measured in several hundred Danish and Norwegian daycare centres. 80 dB corresponds to an adult man shouting. This is 20 dB more than the recommended maximum limit for noise in daycare centres set by the Norwegian Labour Inspection Authority.

The long-term consequences of noise in daycare centres for children are still unknown, but it is natural to assume that children's hearing is also damaged. Recent research has shown that 1 in 6 children have ringing in the ears when they leave daycare centres and start school.

We have confirmed time and time again that the everyday lives of children and adults are drastically improved by reducing the noise created in daycare centres by installing sufficient sound-absorbing panels and installations in the premises.

This is how much you need

In areas where there is activity and a desire for good attenuation and shielding of sound, it is important to have a lot of and correct sound attenuation, known in technical terms as sound absorption.

Most rooms tend to have hard, parallel walls and surfaces, which causes reverberation (echo). And in some cases, the sound "bounces" between the walls, known as "flutter echo".

Reverberation and flutter echoes are eliminated by installing absorbers at "speaking height" on the walls and ceiling. At the same time, acoustic partitions are well suited to creating "quiet zones" and attenuating directional sound, while providing visual screening. In open, large rooms, it is also effective to install absorbers that hang from the ceiling, such as rafts or baffles.

After carrying out a large number of measurements, calculations and installations, we have learnt that most living spaces need a coverage level of approx. 65% in relation to floor area to be good and usable rooms for most applications. If there is extra headroom, greater coverage is often required.

A combination of sound-absorbing ceilings, absorbers on the walls, carpets and special sound-absorbing furniture and pictures/decorations can be realised "everywhere" and to such an extent that the conditions are very good for the users.

The formula is as follows
The room's m² / 100 x experience-based coverage ratio of 65% = X m²

Example
The room is 75 metres² / 100 x 65% = approx. 48.75 m² absorbers are needed in the room.

This is, of course, a rough and experience-based approach. To be more precise, you need to carry out acoustic measurements in the area and base exact calculations on that.

All our calculations and measurements are based on the standard NS8175:2019 - Sound in buildings and NS8178:2014 (music and rehearsal rooms). Note that the 2012 standard still applies according to the Building Regulations, TEK 17. Soundproofing products recommended will be in accordance with CE 13964:2014 or equivalent.
