Even better atmosphere at Storhaug Apotek neighbourhood café

Storhaug Apotek Bydelscafe is a former pharmacy that has now been restored to its original charm. Considerable resources have been invested in returning the premises to the way it once was, when medicines were sold over the same counter that is now used to serve freshly baked goods and good drinks.

The challenge

After the opening, the owners realised that they had got most things right - apart from the acoustics. The more guests came in, the worse the sound conditions became. Fortunately, they were advised to contact the Norwegian Acoustics Centre for professional help.

We quickly responded and carried out a reverberation measurement in the premises. The measurement result showed a reverberation time of 0.7 Tsek, while the recommended maximum value to achieve sound class B according to NS 8175:2019 is 0.47 Tsek.

Acoustic measures that were chosen

In order to preserve the nice touch and colours already established in the café, we agreed with the owners that Frigg™ Beige was the right choice. This is a class A sound absorber with a pleasant beige colour that blends naturally into the interior. The panels were chosen in a size of 60 × 120 cm to minimise joints and give a clean and coherent look.

Better sound environment and increased well-being

After installation, the reverberation time was reduced to 0.4 Tsek. very close to sound class A. The result is comfortable and balanced acoustics that give guests a calm and cosy atmosphere. Something that both we at the Norwegian Acoustics Centre and Aftenbladet can agree with. The café received roll of the dice 5 in their review.
